2012 “Reserve” Cabernet Franc, Chalk Hill, Sonoma County
Our Cabernet Franc is from the high vineyards of Windsor Oaks Estate and represents Sonoma County’s incredible growing conditions and the passion and talent of winemaker Margaret Davenport. On the nose, the wine starts with characters of licorice, clove, and black cherry combined with slight bell pepper and roasted winter squash. Minerality also shows up on the nose, with subtle aromas of granite and freshly moistened dirt. On the palate, the wine starts out light with a texture much like chardonnay and supple tannins. The initial flavor is of blackberries, rhubarb and a hint of caraway. Don’t let this wine trick you into thinking it is light. After a second or two on the palate, as it moves further back, it explodes with dark fruit aromas: ripe plum, ripe yellow peach, raisin, and black currant.
14.5% alcohol by volume, the aroma-flavor-alcohol balance is perfect to match the elegance of this wine. Pay close attention to the finish. It now resembles sandalwood, cedar, cloves, and tobacco but should change greatly as it ages. Most do not recommend aging cabernet franc but this wine should be good through at least 2020. This wine should be decanted at least 60 minutes before enjoying.
