2012 Mountain Cuvee
The 2012 Mountain Cuvee is a lovely representation of the higher terrain of Windsor Oaks and winemaker, Margaret Davenport’s authenticity and creativity. The nose of this wine starts out with powerful characters of plum and dark fruit. Hints of cedar and sandalwood balance out flavors of plum, dark cherry, and tobacco aromas that originate from this wine. The palate boasts complex tannins (especially when aspirated) and a luscious mouth feel that is not overly acidic. Star anise and cassis notes are exemplified in the finish of this predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Leather and allspice lurk in the background and make themselves present only at the tail of the finish.
This wine is spectacular because it has enough alcohol to volatilize the complex flavors but not enough to diminish them. Originating near the summit of the Windsor Oaks property, as high as 900 feet above sea level, the fruit for the Mountain Cuvee experienced harsher growing conditions than fruit near sea level would have. The soil is much sandier, nutrients flow downhill, and the vines are stressed more because they do not have as much water. The root system digs down deeper with mountain vines to pull more nutrients and minerals from the lower depths of the soil. This results in smaller berries with much more concentrated color and tannins. This wine should be decanted for at least 60 minutes before enjoying. The 2012 Mountain Cuvee can be cellared and enjoyed at least through 2020.
